Chicago Integrative Cancer Care

Chicago Integrative Care

Integrative cancer care is a person-centered approach to treating the physical, mental and emotional side effects of cancer and its treatment. The integrative care team at City of Hope® Cancer Center Chicago works with patients before, during and after their treatment to offer a wide range of supportive care services, from occupational therapy and behavioral health counseling to pain management and nutritional support.

What Does Integrative Cancer Care Involve?

Most cancer patients experience both physical side effects and emotional health challenges related to their diagnosis or treatment. The integrative care specialists at City of Hope Chicago are highly experienced in providing compassionate, evidence-based care for many of these conditions, including:

  • Rehabilitation programs for patients who may require physical, occupational or speech therapy before returning to normal activities
  • Behavioral health counseling to support those who are experiencing emotional or mental health concerns
  • Chiropractic care and massage therapy options that may help manage pain or discomfort or to improve mobility during or after cancer treatment
  • Diet and nutritional support to help patients experiencing digestive or nutritional issues
  • Naturopathic options that may help alleviate the side effects of cancer and its treatment
  • Sexual health support for patients who have concerns about intimacy or sexual dysfunction
  • Spiritual support for patients from a wide range of faith-based backgrounds
  • Salon and spa options that support positive body image and emotional well-being, including wig and scarf fittings for those who have lost their hair

What Are the Benefits of Integrative Medicine?

Recognizing the sometimes-debilitating impacts of physical or emotional side effects patients often experience during or after treatment, City of Hope prioritizes making integrative care an integral part of our patients’ cancer care plans. The benefits of an integrative approach to treating cancer include:

  • Better management of very common physical side effects like fatigue, weight loss and digestive issues
  • Additional support for common emotional health concerns, like stress, depression or anxiety
  • Tips and advice for how to address pain, a side effect that many patients experience even after treatment
  • Reductions in treatment delays by helping patients become as mentally and physically comfortable as possible
