Chicago, Nov. 20, 2025 – City of Hope® Cancer Center, one of the largest and most advanced cancer research and treatment organizations in the United States with its National Medical Center ranked among the nation’s top cancer centers by U.S. News & World Report, and Humboldt Park Health are joining forces to bring world-class cancer care directly to Chicago’s West Side, breaking down barriers to early detection and lifesaving treatment for one of the community’s most pressing health concerns.

Through this collaboration, City of Hope physicians will provide oncology services at Humboldt Park Health, ensuring patients receive timely access to best-in-class cancer care and preventive screenings closer to home. This collaboration addresses critical barriers faced by many residents who are underinsured and less likely to receive early, lifesaving cancer treatment.

Humboldt Park Health is a designated safety-net hospital, providing care to all individuals regardless of insurance status or ability to pay. Safety-net hospitals play a vital role in public health, emergency preparedness, and advancing healthcare equity. City of Hope Cancer Center Chicago has joined forces with Humboldt Park Health in what is the first collaboration of its kind between our institution and a safety-net hospital in Illinois. This collaboration represents a significant step in our organization’s commitment to expanding access and ensuring that every patient — no matter their circumstances — can receive high-quality, compassionate care.

“City of Hope is dedicated to bringing the highest standard of cancer care to every person who needs it. Together, we’re breaking down barriers to early detection, timely treatment and prevention for some of the most vulnerable members of our community,” said Pete Govorchin, president of City of Hope Cancer Center Chicago.

The collaboration will include medical oncology, hematologic oncology, radiation oncology, and surgical oncology services provided by City of Hope Cancer Center physicians.

Cancer is among the leading causes of death worldwide. Cancer was identified as a top community health concern in Humboldt Park Health’s 2022 Community Health Needs Assessment, underscoring the urgency of expanding access to care.

“We are excited to announce that Humboldt Park Health and City of Hope are now collaborating to offer expanded onsite oncology support. This allows patients to begin their cancer journey promptly and close to home with trusted physicians who are experts in their field,” said Jose R. Sanchez, president and CEO of Humboldt Park Health. “We welcome City of Hope and look forward to enhancing our commitment to providing high-quality, compassionate care to the Humboldt Park community.”

Cancer is alarmingly common: one in two men and one in three women in the U.S. will be diagnosed during their lifetime, according to the American Cancer Society. Routine screenings help detect cancer early, even before symptoms arise, when treatment is most effective and outcomes improve dramatically. Yet communities like Humboldt Park experience disproportionately high mortality rates due, in part, to limited awareness and access. To close this gap, Humboldt Park Health will now provide these essential screenings:

  • Mammograms
  • Pap smears and HPV testing
  • Colonoscopy
  • Lung cancer screening for eligible current or former smokers
  • PSA testing for men
  • Skin cancer screenings

By expanding access to preventive care, early detection and expert treatment, City of Hope and Humboldt Park Health aim to improve cancer outcomes and support the long-term health of families across Chicago’s West Side.
