David Bryan Stewart, Sr., M.D., M.H.A., F.A.C.S., F.A.S.C.R.S., is chief of surgery and medical director of surgical operations at City of Hope® Cancer Center Chicago.
In addition to overseeing all surgical services for our Chicago-area locations, Dr. Stewart is a nationally recognized leader in colorectal cancer and a fellowship-trained colorectal surgeon with expertise in advanced colorectal surgical techniques, including minimally invasive, robotic and organ-preserving surgeries. When working with patients, Dr. Stewart takes a patient-centered approach to care that prioritizes quality of life and his patients’ own health goals.
Dr. Stewart earned his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, completed his internship and residency at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in California, and pursued his clinical and research fellowships in colon and rectal surgery at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. Additionally, he earned a master’s in health administration from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois. He served in several leadership roles before joining City of Hope, most recently as division chief of general surgery at Southern Illinois University in Springfield.
Dr. Stewart is a National Institutes of Health and National Sciences Foundation funded researcher on C difficile infection. He is a site reviewer for the National Accreditation Program for Rectal Cancer, and he serves on the Commission on Cancer Program Site Reviewer Committee.
Dr. Stewart is a member of the editorial boards of JAMA Surgery, Annals of Surgery and Diseases of the Colon and Rectum. Additionally, he is an examiner for both the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery, a member of the American College of Surgeons Board of Governors and a member at large for the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons executive council.
