City of Hope's 2024 Walk for Hope brought together more than 10,000 participants across the nation, uniting communities in a powerful display of solidarity and purpose. The events, held near Chicago, Atlanta, Phoenix, Orange County and Los Angeles — celebrated more than 800 survivors, engaged nearly 4,000 City of Hope employees and raised over $2.5 million to advance cancer research and care. Watch a recap of this year's incredible events.
Memorable Action
From the inspiring stories of survivors to the enthusiastic steps of walkers, the events underscored the strength and resilience of a community united against cancer.
Participants like Brian Petrino, who walked the 5k in Atlanta as he continues to battle Stage 4 metastatic prostate cancer, reminded everyone why they walk: "Every morning when you’re taking all your medications, cancer says, ‘Good morning, Brian.’ You’ve got to make that decision: Am I going to go back to bed or am I going to press on? There are days where it wins. And that’s OK. You can’t win every day. But you have to keep pressing on.”
The events were also filled with music, food trucks and family-friendly fun, creating a sense of celebration and camaraderie among all who attended.

City of Hope leaders from across the health system walked with their families, friends and teams to support the cause.
Kristin Bertell, chief philanthropy officer, City of Hope, told the crowd in Duarte, California, at City of Hope’s main campus:
“The first time I did this Walk, I was pushing a baby stroller around campus. It seems like just yesterday. And I remember the patients waving as we went by, my little family and I. Now, my kids are bigger, and so is this Walk — but I will always remember how emotional that was, to be acknowledged by the very people we were there for. It was a huge reminder that this isn’t about cancer, it’s about people defeating it.”
Community Support at Its Finest
This year’s Walk for Hope was made possible thanks to the incredible support of sponsors, volunteers and participants. Brighton Collectibles, our Signature Sponsor, played a vital role in the event’s success, alongside many other partners who generously contributed their time and resources.
Special recognition goes to the “Hope Starts With Us” team for their exceptional efforts in organizing events across all of City of Hope’s markets. The team's dedication and hard work ensured that Walk for Hope was a meaningful and impactful experience, no matter where participants joined from.
John Carpten, Ph.D., chief scientific officer, Irell & Manella Cancer Center Director’s Distinguished Chair and Morgan & Helen Chu Director’s Chair of the Beckman Research Institute, told the walkers in Duarte:
“This is my first Walk. And it may be for many of you, too. We are thankful that you are taking the time, on a weekend, to bring your friends and family to this important event. We are thrilled to announce that nearly 1,400 Duarte employees on 100 teams are participating in this Walk! “
