Monica C. Malec, M.D., F.A.A.H.P.M., is chief of supportive care and integrative oncology at City of Hope® Cancer Center Chicago, where she oversees a range of programs, services and initiatives that help patients manage their physical, emotional and social health during treatment and into survivorship and end-of-life care. A nationally recognized expert in supportive care, Dr. Malec has more than 30 years’ experience in her field.
The approaches Dr. Malec takes when working with patients and their loved ones include proactive screening for symptoms related to cancer or its treatments, integrating mind-body wellness into patients’ journeys from day one and ensuring that overall health and wellness remain a priority even after treatment ends.
Double board-certified in both internal medicine and hospice and palliative care medicine, Dr. Malec has received multiple honors and recognitions. These include being named a fellow of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine, a senior faculty scholar with the Bucksbaum-Siegler Institute for Clinical Excellence and inclusion on top doctors lists published by both Castle Connelly and Chicago Magazine.
A physician-scholar with more than 30 peer-reviewed publications to her name, Dr. Malec has given dozens of invited lectures, been co-investigator on multiple funded research initiatives and mentored numerous junior colleagues over the course of her career. After earning her medical degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago, she went on to pursue an internal medicine residency at Rush University Medical Center, also in Chicago, before embarking on her career in palliative medicine.
Before joining City of Hope, Dr. Malec was the director of palliative medicine clinical programs at the University of Chicago’s Section of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine.
