HCT Discharge Class for Caregivers

It can be stressful to care for someone after they receive a Hematopoietic Cell Transplant (HCT). This class helps caregivers get ready to take the patient home safely. You will learn ways to prepare your home, take care of your loved one and keep up your well-being as a caregiver (self-care).

The class is taught by a Clinical Social Worker and a Registered Nurse. Both are experts in oncology and have taught hundreds of caregivers. They developed the class with a wonderful team that included hematology physicians, dietitians, occupational therapists, and a health educator.

The clinical social worker will discuss:
  • Self-care practices
  • Changes in relationships
  • Intimacy and sexual activity
  • Communication with the medical team
  • Caregiver resources
The registered nurse will discuss:
  • How to prepare your home
  • Pet safety
  • Staying social
  • Food safety
  • Nutrition
  • Infection precautions
  • Medication management
  • Daily health assessment
  • Graft versus host disease

Caregivers who took the class shared that they felt ready to care for their loved ones and had more awareness of their own needs.
