Patrick Fueger Scientific Biography

Patrick Fueger, Ph.D., is associate professor in the Department of Molecular & Cellular Metabolism within City of Hope’s Diabetes and Metabolism Research Institute and director of the Metabolic Phenotyping Core Facility in  Beckman Research Institute of City of Hope.

 

His commitment to research to defeat diabetes is deep and based in personal experience, as he and two of his brothers have type 1 diabetes. This passion fuels his efforts in the laboratory, as well as his more than three decades of volunteer work with camps for children with diabetes.

 

Earlier in Dr. Fueger’s academic career, he developed a refinement of the hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp, a technique for measuring insulin production and resistance; today, his method is a gold standard in metabolic testing. He has earned a New Investigator Award from the American Physiological Society and a Pathway to Independence Award from the National Institutes of Health.

 

Dr. Fueger previously held a faculty position at the Indiana University School of Medicine and, before that, a JDRF-funded postdoctoral fellowship at Duke University in the laboratory of Christopher Newgard, Ph.D. Dr. Fueger’s alma mater is the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where he earned his B.S., M.S. and Ph.D., the latter under the mentorship of David Wasserman, Ph.D.
