City of Hope Orange County celebrates 100th and 101st patients treated with county’s most advanced radiation oncology technology

Patients with challenging cancer diagnoses have treatment options at City of Hope Orange County that may be difficult to find elsewhere.

The radiation oncology team at City of Hope Orange County Lennar Foundation Cancer Center marked a milestone, gathering to recognize the 100th and 101st patients treated on the cancer center’s advanced MRIdian Linac system.

Part of the cancer center’s leading-edge suite of radiation oncology technology, the MRIdian is a breakthrough in cancer care. By combining the clarity of real-time MRI imaging with the precision of radiation therapy, treating physicians can target tumors with unmatched accuracy while sparing healthy tissue. What makes this technology even more remarkable is the ability to adapt treatments daily to the patient’s anatomy — ensuring the highest precision, even as the body naturally changes over time.

“For our patients, innovations in radiation oncology mean more effective treatments, fewer side effects, and, most importantly, renewed hope for better outcomes,” said Percy Lee, M.D., Medical Director of Orange County & Coastal Region Radiation Oncology, City of Hope Orange County, and Vice Chair of Clinical Research, Department of Radiation Oncology, City of Hope.

“It is our privilege to provide not just leading-edge technology but also unwavering support — meeting every patient where they are, with care, compassion, and confidence,” said Lee. “I want to express our deepest gratitude to our patients for placing their trust in us during such a vulnerable time in their lives.”

“City of Hope continues to lead the way in ensuring that our patients have access to an array of the most advanced radiation oncology technology available and the country’s premier experts in the field,” said Terence M. Williams, M.D., Ph.D., Professor and Chair, Department of Radiation Oncology, City of Hope. “It’s gratifying to see how we are changing the lives of patients across our national system of care.”

City of Hope Orange County Lennar Foundation Cancer Center is home to some of the best minds in radiation oncology in the nation. The comprehensive cancer research and treatment center is also the only location in Orange County to provide the three most innovative radiotherapy systems — in the most advanced configurations — available anywhere.

  • MRIdian Linac. The MRIdian radiotherapy system targets complex tumors that may be difficult to treat with more traditional therapies. MRIdian combines two technologies — real-time, diagnostic-quality MRI capabilities and an advanced linear accelerator on a single platform.
  • Ethos by Varian. City of Hope is the first in Orange County to launch an Ethos adaptive radiation program. The Ethos system provides personalized therapy through leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) and CT images obtained while the patient is in treatment.
  • TrueBeam by Varian. The TrueBeam radiotherapy system provides a variety of treatment techniques to address a broad range of cancer cases. Technology integration enables clinicians to treat a wider array of cancer cases using a diverse range of radiation therapies.

Having multiple radiotherapy options ensures City of Hope Orange County radiation oncologists have a full toolkit from which to select the right therapy that works best for each patient’s cancer at the right time.
