A new government-commissioned study published in the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs concludes that health risks from alcohol begin at a single drink a day, leading researchers to recommend limiting intake. Alcohol is identified as a strong carcinogen, increasing the risk of at least seven cancer types. City of Hope's Nishan Tchekmedyian, M.D., M.B.A., explains that alcohol breaks down into acetaldehyde, which damages DNA and may lead to tumor growth. Tchekmedyian advises individuals concerned about alcohol intake to consult their doctor.
