City of Hope Orange County, the most advanced cancer research and treatment organization in Orange County, has released a report that evaluates the cancer incidence rate in people ages 18 and 49 in Orange County and Southern California amid a national epidemic of early-onset cancer diagnoses.

Nature Medicine has retracted a high-profile lung cancer study that claimed morning immunotherapy greatly improved survival, citing major concerns about data integrity and trial design. City of Hope's Sumanta Pal, M.D., criticized the biological plausibility, telling STAT at the time that there were few compelling reasons why treatment timing would matter, as antibody levels decline slowly over weeks. Pal’s skepticism, shared by other experts, contributed to heightened scrutiny and ultimately the retraction, highlighting the need for rigorous validation before changing clinical practice.

City of Hope hosted a forum on breast cancer research, exploring less invasive treatments. City of Hope's Hope Rugo, M.D., discussed optimizing treatment and quality of life. City of Hope Orange County's Irene Kang, M.D., presented the Optima Study, showing chemotherapy may not be necessary for some early stage breast cancers. City of Hope's Veronica Jones, M.D., detailed the Senomac Trial, which supports limiting axillary surgery for better patient outcomes. Rugo also noted the effectiveness of pembrolizumab for triple negative breast cancer.
