Low-Dose Radiation Therapy for Osteoarthritis and Other Benign Conditions

APEx American Society of Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) badge

At City of Hope®, the Department of Radiation Oncology now offers treatment for non‑malignant conditions, such as osteoarthritis, keloid scars, Dupuytren’s contracture, plantar fasciitis and early gynecomastia, to help manage symptoms and improve quality of life for our patients. For individuals who have not found adequate relief with other treatments, low‑dose radiation therapy (LD‑RT) provides a noninvasive, painless option and is now available at the following City of Hope radiation oncology locations.

Low-Dose Radiation Therapy for Benign Conditions

Low‑dose radiation therapy (LD‑RT) is a noninvasive treatment option used for selected noncancerous conditions involving chronic inflammation, pain or abnormal tissue growth. Unlike the higher radiation doses used to treat cancer, LD‑RT uses significantly lower doses designed to reduce inflammation, alleviate discomfort and minimize the risk of side effects.

LD‑RT has been used in clinical practice for decades, particularly in Europe and at major academic medical centers, and may be considered when standard conservative treatments have not provided sufficient relief.

Conditions that may be treated with LD‑RT include:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Keloid scars
  • Dupuytren’s contracture (early stages)
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Painful gynecomastia

Advantages of Low-Dose Radiation Therapy

Noninvasive and Painless

LD‑RT is delivered externally and does not require surgery, needles or anesthesia. Most patients experience no discomfort during treatment.

Generally Well Tolerated

Because the radiation dose is low and the treatment area is targeted, LD‑RT is associated with minimal side effects in appropriately selected patients.

An Option for Older Adults

LD‑RT may be especially beneficial for older adults seeking symptom relief with minimal intervention or for those who may not be ideal candidates for surgery.

Insurance Coverage Support

Insurance coverage for LD‑RT is generally available depending on the condition and individual insurance plan. Our team helps patients understand their coverage and treatment options before beginning care.
