What Sets Our Los Angeles-Area Genitourinary Cancer Program Apart?
At City of Hope, our experts specialize in treating complex bladder, kidney, prostate and testicular cancers, providing personalized care for patients at advanced stages and with additional medical conditions. Our urologic surgeons are leaders in minimally invasive and robotic surgeries, significantly reducing discomfort and recovery time while preserving healthy organs.
We offer a wide portfolio of advanced cancer-fighting medications with fewer side effects. Our innovative clinical trials explore new therapies, including immunity-based and stem cell treatments, and we utilize genomic and molecular profiling to customize treatments. Our comprehensive follow-up and recovery program helps minimize recurrence risk and improve quality of life. Our doctors also specialize in urinary tract and pelvic floor reconstruction and the treatment of erectile dysfunction, urinary incontinence and urologic retroperitoneal diseases.
- City of Hope has one of the largest prostate cancer programs in California and the Western United States, with outcomes that rank higher than most institutions in the SEER national registry. Our innovative research focuses on early diagnosis and prevention of prostate cancer, intraoperative imaging, quality-of-life management during prostate cancer treatment and identification of high-risk prostate cancer patients. We were also one of the first cancer centers in the United States to perform robotic-assisted prostatectomy using the da Vinci surgical system, starting in 2003. Since then, our surgeons have performed over 11,000 robotic procedures. The most significant benefits to patients are quicker recovery times and decreased blood loss.
- City of Hope maintains an extensive database of bladder cancer outcomes to help develop new treatment protocols, ensuring that our patients receive the best and most advanced care available. For instance, we treat muscle-invasive bladder cancer using robotic-assisted laparoscopic cystectomy along with bilateral pelvic lymph node dissection.
- We also perform a variety of procedures for kidney cancer or renal masses, including radical nephrectomy and nephron-sparing surgery (open, laparoscopic or robotic-assisted), as well as cryoablation and radiofrequency ablation (which can be performed percutaneously or laparoscopically). For selected renal cases, same-day discharge may be possible. We are one of the largest centers offering robotic cystectomies along with innovative options for urinary diversion, such as Indiana pouches and neobladders.
- In addition, we utilize state-of-the-art diagnostic tools and perform minimally invasive robotic-assisted surgery for testicular cancer. Our approach includes pioneering drug research, clinical trials, innovative chemotherapy regimens, active surveillance, fertility-preserving therapies and comprehensive support programs for families and survivors. We employ various techniques to treat testicular cancer, including radical inguinal orchiectomy, retroperitoneal lymph node dissection, radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Our medical oncologists have access to a wide range of drugs to fight testicular cancer.
