Who We Are: Diabetes, Endocrinology & Metabolism

 

The impact of these conditions is both broad and serious: There are approximately 40 million diabetes patients in the U.S. today, and current trends indicate that diabetes and obesity constitute one of America’s greatest health challenges over the next 30 years. Acute symptoms of diabetes limit people’s lives, and the long-term effects can be life-threatening. Meanwhile, the American Cancer Society estimates that in 2026 thyroid cancer alone will account for 45,240 new diagnoses and 2,320 deaths in the U.S. 

 

Taking on these conditions requires teamwork. To advance new strategies for treatment and prevention addressing type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes and obesity, we work hand-in-hand with colleagues at the Arthur Riggs Diabetes & Metabolism Research Institute — some of the best scientists in the world — to move exciting discoveries from the laboratory to the clinic. 

 

At the same time, our connections with City of Hope’s cancer researchers provide bountiful opportunities to push forward new therapies for those facing endocrine tumors and hormonal syndromes secondary to cancer.

 

Our comprehensive care program similarly unites experts across an array of disciplines. Patients benefit from an integrated effort including endocrinologists, oncologists, surgeons, pathologists, radiologists and geneticists, as well as nurses, educators, dietitians, pharmacists and more. This team approach is infused with City of Hope’s hallmark commitment to compassion and individualized care.

 

Our treatment and research programs are bolstered by the work of medical fellows and doctoral students. The knowledge and experience they gain in the process support our goal of training the next generation of outstanding endocrinologists and investigators.
