Department of Radiation Oncology
City of Hope's Department of Radiation Oncology has long been at the forefront of providing the best evidence-based clinical care, forging technological advances and translating discoveries from the bench into clinical practice. We take pride in delivering care marked by quality, integrity, compassion, a sense of urgency and teamwork.
Why Choose City of Hope
We offer comprehensive radiation services at world-class City of Hope centers in the Phoenix, Atlanta, and Chicago areas, and Southern California, across the Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties. We are the largest provider of radiation services, including image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT), intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT), stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT), stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (SABR), stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), adaptive radiation therapy (ART), brachytherapy, electron therapy, and other forms of radiation, in the greater Los Angeles area.
Our world-class radiation oncologists lead the way in bringing tomorrow’s therapies to patients today. Our radiation machines deliver multiple forms of radiation therapy and include advanced imaging of tumors that allows us to see and treat them through precise targeting of our radiation beams. This versatility maximizes the destruction of cancer cells while sparing nearby healthy tissue, resulting in less invasive and painful treatment, faster healing and a shorter recovery time.
We have also pioneered a form of total body irradiation that focuses radiation energy on bone marrow while minimizing exposure to other tissues. We have performed this treatment more than any other center worldwide. Today, total body irradiation is essential for patients undergoing life-saving bone marrow transplantation. Patients with blood cancers, such as leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma — particularly those with advanced cases — may benefit from better outcomes and boost their chances of complete remission.
We are the first in Southern California to offer real-time PET-guided radiation, which leverages the biology of the tumor to image and treat it and integrate PET (positron emission tomography), mpMRI (multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging) and
3D computed tomography (CT) with next-generation technology to improve cancer targeting. We were also the first center on the West Coast to offer TomoTherapy, an advanced form of helical radiation where the table moves continuously through a rotating ring, delivering radiation from all angles simultaneously.
At our main campus in Duarte, California, The Elsie & Robert Pierson Radiation Oncology Center offers an array of advanced technologies, including Ethos adaptive radiotherapy, RefleXion SCINTIX, TomoTherapy and Varian TrueBeam radiotherapy, along with brachytherapy, total body irradiation, total marrow or lymphoid irradiation, total skin electron radiotherapy, radiopharmaceuticals, radioimmunotherapy, Y-90 microspheres, innovative clinical trials, and additional clinical services. The City of Hope Orange County Lennar Foundation Cancer Center also has Ethos adaptive radiotherapy and an MRI-linear accelerator.
We offer a comprehensive set of specialized services and advanced technologies planned and provided by a uniquely trained staff for a broad range of cancer diagnoses.

What's happening at City of Hope's Department of Radiation Oncology coming soon
The Department of Supportive Care Medicine is a "city" — a community — working together to make sure you and your loved ones never have to face the challenges involved with cancer alone.
This four-week clinical elective offers the student instruction and experience in clinical radiation oncology and an introduction to radiobiology and radiation physics.
City of Hope was founded by individuals' philanthropic efforts more than 100 years ago. Your support enables us to strive for new breakthroughs and better therapies — helping more people enjoy longer, better lives.
